Nalgene Recall Update
UPDATE: If you’re worried about drinking out of water bottles with BPA. Check out our list of BPA free Alternatives.
For those of you following the rather rapid decline that Nalgene BPA products have been facing over the past few months we have now reached the boiling point. Nalgene has decided to stop production of all products utilizing BPA in any way shape or form.
It has been long speculated as to whether Nalgene was going to wait until the U.S. Govt had finished its testing and research into BPA. With consumer pressure building and rumors of a Canadian ban on BPA circulating, it appears Nalgene is going to “do the right thing.” Seems like a great idea, I mean would you continue to use a product that could potentially kill you? Think cigarettes.
We as the masses often seem to have a great deal of difficulty controlling our urges and Nalgene bottles have become a calling card for the “hey I am an outdoor enthusiast” crowd. And now we come to find it could be killing us all. Doom and Dismay to all!!!
So what does this all mean?!?!
Well the problem is not contained to our water bottles, there are a ton of products that utilize this Bisphenol-A and have for over 50 years. We are now at the mercy of the manufacturers to identify when BPA has been used and for all I know even if it is eventually determined to be as bad for us as advertised what will be the reaction? Will we really care?
Think about the Surgeon Generals warning on tobacco products, did it really have an impact?
So I warn you all, as more research is done, read long and hard and figure out the truth of the matter. Check out Nalgene’s BPA page for their take on the matter, also do your own research and decide for yourself, remember the majority of reports out there are slanted by the all mighty dollar.
Here is a late addition from another great blog giving some more great information concerning this issue.

To clarify, Nalgene is stopping production of new bottles containing BPA. This is not a recall.
So has anyone heard yet if Nalgene is going to do something about a recall. I would like a new bottle, becase I used my old bottle alot, and I now need another source to tote my water. I would think that if Nalgene cares about their valued customers they would do a store swap or a complete recall. I hope you have some insight on this matter, because I am getting tired of not using my Nalgene and I WANT A NEW ONE!!!! sorry about the screaming, but just tired of waiting.
Is there a site that shows which Nalgene bottles are made with BPA and which are not? Mine has a “7″ Recycle symbol, how can you tell…. I bought mine at Sam’s Club wuth a Brita Filter Picher about 2 mos. ago (3/08).
Tom
Larouse: I don’t think there will be a recall until the US government officially declares BPA unsafe- which doesn’t look like it’s happening anytime soon. Nalgene is slowly phasing out the BPA bottles, due to consumer demand. Check out their FAQ for more info.
Tom: Nalgene has a chart that helps a little. All but the Original Polycarbonate (which is the most popular) are BPA free. The #7 Recycle symbol isn’t a definite indication of BPA. I hope this helps.
I just got off the phone with them and they are still claiming the old bottles are “safe” but are introducing a new “Everday” line which is BPA Free. These will have a #7 on the bottom indicating that they are “Other” type of plastic - BPA Free. I just ordered one to be on the safe side. By the way, if you use the code “CHOICE” during your purchase you get 20% off.
Eric, Thanks for the heads up. Our readers will be stoked to know that Nalgene understands the freedom of “choice” is with the consumer! 20% of is not to shabby.
A guy at my local REI said that they would swap out old bottles for new, but I’m guessing that they will only do it for bottles originally purchased there. The ones I have that I purchased at REI have a REI logo on them. I have not actually gone in to try it but that is what I was told.
Hey Alan thanks for the heads up. Let us know if it works out and if so what criteria have to be met, as well as where you are from so if it works others can get in there.
