BPA study released
Over the past few months I have posted information about BPA or bisphenol A. Which is a chemical used in a wide variety of products from our beloved Nalgenes to baby bottles to the liners in cans of veggies. And while the debate over the safety of BPA has been fierce, the majority of retailers have removed products from their shelves due to the fear that BPA can lead to cancer and other nastiness. As a result manufactures have ceased use of BPA and have launched costly add campaigns to try and win the hearts and minds of their customers back.
The most comprehensive study to date concerning BPA has been published and well you guessed it BPA it appears that it may actually NOT be a safe chemical!! The FDA released in its report that BPA is in fact SAFE, however there is a great deal of controversy. Especially due to some inconclusive animal studies. Now it appears that the mudslinging concerning the use of BPA in food containers will begin.
So the FDA says the dangers of BPA are acceptable. Which equates to saying the number of people that may become ill is low enough to not issue a moratorium on the use of the chemical. Think if you were one of the “few” which could be in the millions that gets sick? Would that be alright with you? So who knows. The one thing we do know is that more research is needed…of course.
Here is a recent article that gives an over view.
Full FDA report in PDF here.
Full National Toxicology Program, Department of Heath and Human Services Report PDF here.
Here and here and here and here are the other posts I have written concerning BPA.
We of course will let you know when we hear any conclusive news concerning BPA.
