Top 15 Ski Resorts in America

Outside magazine recently released its choices of top 15 resorts in America.

While Outside is geared more towards all outdoors activities, the gentleman that compiled this years list is none other than Marc Peruzzi, who currently holds the reigns as editor of Skiing Magazine. So this guy is not with out backing in the skiing world.

Top 15 Ski Resorts:

1. Alta/Snowbird, Utah

2. Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia

3. Vail, Colorado

4. Jackson Hole, Wyoming

5. Snowbasin, Utah

6. Fernie Alpine Resort, British Columbia

7. Silverton Mountain, Colorado

8. Aspen Highlands and Snowmass, Colorado

9. Squaw Valley, California

10. Steamboat, Colorado

11. Mammoth, California

12. Telluride, Colorado

13. Solitude, Utah

14. Alyeska Resort, Alaska

15. Taos, New Mexico

Now I know there are more than likely some disagreements as to the ranking, I am sure some of you have arguments for or against those in this list. We all have our favorites and although I live in Colorado I am quite please one of my personal favorites did not make the cut. This helps keep the crowds down!!

Marc Peruzzi is an elitist skier. The only number 1 ranking Alta deserves is “Number 1 at catering to aging, tight pants- and neon-wearing skiers who are holding on to a 1980’s grudge against snowboarders.” Although, I have had a subscription to Skiing in the past and the publication has always had a negative attitude towards snowboarders, so if that is the type of people they want to write for then perhaps they should line up Alta, Deer Valley, and Mad River Glen in the top three so all of the haters will flock there. I really do question his motivation for putting Alta at number 1. Ski Magazine’s Top Resorts list was done by a readers poll and Alta ended up at 28th this year (and Deer Valley was 1st so Ski is really no better). Sorry to act so bitter about it but the snowboarding community has proven that we are here to stay. These resorts that hold on to these bans aren’t promoting harmony among the different demographics of the ski industry, they are doing just the opposite.

I’m with you though Yeti, I don’t want to see my stashes turn up on a list like this. It’s painful enough to see Vail at 3rd (and 2nd in Ski Mag), but Vail is no secret. It’s a massive and beautiful resort with plenty of room for everyone - skiers and boarders. I’m just not telling anyone which part of the mountain I ride!
