UpaDowna Holiday Gift Guide 2010

Man I tell you there is no harder time of year to get things going than the holiday season. Especially if you are searching for that perfect gift for the adventurer in your life. Lets be honest there is so much great stuff out there it is pretty difficult to whittle it down to what will really mean the world to them. So here is a bit of advice, think of their passions and get something that will help them reach new heights or at least enjoy their passions more. For outdoor junkies like us this still leaves a big question mark as to what will actually be that magical item. We've complied a bit of a smorgasbord of gifts that will do the trick, so if you are tired of searching through the endless supply of great gift ideas for your gear loving nut this season then this is the last spot you'll need to look. We've compiled a short list of items that should definitely be on your radar when shopping this season.

All of the following items we have either fully reviewed or are in the midst of completing the full review, nonetheless we feel that all rate high in the kick-ass category and should be considered for what ever booze-hound or gear-slut you know (including yourself). For other ideas look through our Gear section.

MK Granite Creek Pant: ($72, Mountain Khakis Every guy needs a pair of go to gear and beer pants, whether the focus of the day is a new V6 boulder problem or finding the best beer pairing while grilling the perfect Elk tenderloin. These technical pants have been around for a bit as the Snake River and are now re-named the Granite Creek but all of the great features have been retained. These quick drying relaxed fit pants are the new standard for trail, pub, and crag.

Victorinox Swiss Tool ($109, Victorinox) Really this or any super solid multi tool is sure to be welcome for any adventurer. See more here on our review of this particular one.

Gibbon Slack Line: ($70, GibbonUSA) For simple ease of use and an amazing ability to occupy folks for hours the slick line is by far one of the simplest and most ingenious idea out there. The Classic Slackline kit from GibbonUSA allows you and your buddies an all day activity in the comfort of your back yard or at the crag. Taking only 5 minutes to set up you can be building core strength and balance in no time. We received on of these amazing kits along with the newly released Tree Gear tree protection from Gibbon and now we literally can't stay off of the thing! At first I must admit I was struggling but now that I have realize the basic body positioning, thanks to these videos, I am definitely having more and more fun and I think I am getting the real hang of it. Whatever you do don't watch the pros, these guys will make you feel pretty pathetic!

HydroFlask SS Growler: ($49.95, Hydroflask) While we haven't actually gotten our hands on one yet how can this not be included in our gift guide? Imagine the ability to haul a half gallon of cold beer in a durable stainless steel container that reportedly will keep your cold drinks cold for 24 hours, and your warm toddies warm for 12! Yes folks step right up and drink in this amazing feat of engineering and wizardry. It'll be out soon so keep your eyes out, because believe me this is a must have give for your favorite outdoorsman! Oh and another thing this is no doubt the perfect vessel for your UpaDowna sticker!!

Yakima Kit: (Prices vary by unit, Yakima) This is the one item that goes with out say. If you love the great outdoors as much as we do then you have at one time struggled to find the system to fit all of your needs. More than likely you've used bags and rubbermaids and bungee cords and rope and duct tape and everything in between. And sure it works...for a time and then the inevitable occurs, something breaks loose, gets wet,  falls off, breaks, scratches dents dings whatever and you cry. You tear up and cry like a ninny because with all of your dirtbag thrifty MacGuyveresque ways you just managed to destroy the thing that brings you peace, you have trashed your gear. Well Yakima has heard your silent sobs and wants you to wake up and open your eyes. One thing to say is that all of these products have a bomber rail attachment system which can expand to an amazing size. They have what you need for everything out doors. Of the items I think are the best value both in style and use are the SkyBox, Forklift, and Fat Cat. (Full review on all here)

GSI Dualist/Minimalist( $60/$23, GSI): I really can't say enough about GSI's dedication to losing weight and making things work the best they can. Both of these sets would be a great cook set for the trail. The Dualist is an excellent choice for two or more, where as the minimalist is perfect for one. Each are amazingly lightweight and packable. For full review check here Minimalist.

Deuter Speed Lite 20: ($70, Deuter USA) This is a great do it all pack that won't break the bank. It seems like all to often theses days it is becoming harder and harder to find a simple bag to throw just enough gear in for a nice day out and about. Built with the basics in mind and 1200 cu.in. of cargo space ready to haul just enough gear to make the trip a great success this pack is definitely a favorite of mine. I Use mine for everything from trail runs to days at the crag and I have never been left wanting more, if anything this pack has taught me disciple in what I carry.

GripPro Trainer: ($7.95, Grip Pro) The easiest and least expensive strength trainer I have ever seen. The GripPro Trainer would make a great stocking stuffer for all athletes on your wish list, but I have to warn you these are addicting!!

Harmony House Spices: ($50, Harmony House) Most backpackers never really stray away from their basics when it comes to backcountry meals. This is due to either laze or fear of the unknown. Well this is the perfect doorway into a greater appreciation of all of the wonderfully easy meals that campers can enjoy. Now don't get me wrong you'll need to research meal ideas but by adding a bit of spice to the dishes you are accustomed to you will be blown away by the difference it makes. This spice kit is pretty stellar and will definitely open your taste buds to the possibilities.

If you're looking for stocking stuffers think great hiking socks, we really like the Darn Tough, Wigwam, and Fits brands. Another great investment is a solid hat, and definitely a laminated map and a compass. I for one have been known to spend hours drinking cold beers and planning my next trip by walking the contours on a great topo map. Now if none of these sound like a great gift you should consider any or all of the items off of the ten essentials list so you are helping to keep their ass alive in the event of an emergency!
